Pension Application for Henry Acker

            On this third day of January 1834, personally appeared before me a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in &b for said County, Henry Acker of Cato in said County aged 82 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.  That he enlisted in the Army of the United States in the year 1776, with Lieut Rudolphus Hoovenback a recruiting officer at Livingston’s Manor in the County of Dutchess and State of New York.  That he enlisted into said service for during the war, and entered service in the company of Continental troops commanded by Capt. Percey & Lieut Rudolphus Hoovenback & Ensign Peter VanEtten—that he does not remember the names of his Colonel or other Regiment officers, that he went first [to] Peekskill where he joined said company in the fall of the year 1776, that he continued in said service a term of three months and was engaged in a scouting party down below the lines from Peekskill where his company and Regiment were stationed—that when so engaged as aforesaid he was taken prisoner by the enemy together with one Henry Huff a soldier in the same company that he was taken as such prisoner to Kingsbridge and was detained as such prisoner on the Island of New York a term of eighteen months when he made his escape across the East River in a small boat belonging as he was informed to Major Boldin one of the British officers—that after his escape he returned home, having been absent in service and a prisoner one year and nine months for which term he claims a pension—that whilst a prisoner as aforesaid he was not kept in close confinement but was permitted to go at large and was permitted to go to the City of New York from Kingsbridge, but spent most of his time at Kingsbridge where a detachment of the British Army was stationed during the whole time.  That he was a soldier of the New York line—That he has given the time of his enlistment according to his best recollection.—
            That he was born in the County of Dutchess & State of New York aforesaid 1751 as he believes & has got no record of his age.  That he lived in said County during the war—after the war he removed to the town of Charlestown in the County of Montgomery, from thence he removed to Schodack in Rensselaer County, from thence he removed to Cayuga County aforesaid where he has resided ever since.  That whilst stationed at Peekskill he was engaged in learning the exercise & drilling preparatory to active service.
            He hereby relinquishes all claim whatever to a pension except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any state or territory.  (Signed with his mark)  Henry Acker
