            On this First day of May one thousand eight hundred and eighteen before me the subscriber one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, in and for said County, personally appeared Joel Ackley aged seventy five years, resident in the Township of Oxford and County of Sussex in said District who, being by me first duly sworn according to Law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, Entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land & Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War.
            That he the said Joel Ackley, enlisted in the State of New York in the company commanded by Captain Cobb, of the first New York regiment commanded by Colonel Hasack VansKike; does not know the day when he enlisted, but well recollects he was in the service of the United States when Independence was declared, was taken prisoner by the Indians near Fort Stanwix, carried by them to Montreal and Quebeck was prisoner upwards of three years was exchanged and joined his company and continued in said corps until duly discharged at or near New Windsor State of New York at the end of the war. Was in the battle of Monmouth and is now in reduced circumstances and really stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, has lost his discharged [sic] and has no other evidence of his services now in his power to show.             On this fifth day of June at a session begun on the fourth Tuesday of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the inferior Court of Common Pleas of the said County of Sussex and State of New Jersey. The said Court of Common Pleas being a court of record in and for the said County, being a court constituted and established by the laws of the State of New Jersey as a court of Record having a seal with power to fine and imprison and an unlimited jurisdiction in civil cases and whose judgments are only reversible by writ of error at common Law and there setting at Newton in and for the said County of the term of May—Jacob Ackley—of the age of eighty years [aged five years in just two years!] resident in the Township of Oxford in the County and State aforesaid who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declares that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows. That he the said Joel Ackley enlisted for during the was soon after the commencement of the Revolutionary war in the State of New York in the Company Commanded by Captain Cobb [Copp] in the Regiment Commanded by Col. Hosick VanScaick [Goose VanSchaick] being the first Regiment in the line of the State of New York on the [blank space] Continental establishment, that he was afterward drafted in the Company Commanded by Capt. Parsons in the same Regiment that he continued to serve in the said Regiment during the Revolutionary War aforesaid when he was discharged from the said service at the close of the war in the State of [blank space]
            That he was in the battle of Monmouth and assisted in the taking of Burgoyne.
            That on the first day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen he applied for a pension at the rate of eight dollars per month he being a private in the army aforesaid and on the fifteenth of May in the year 1819 obtained a certificate under the hand and seal of J.L. Edwards in the absence and on behalf of the Secretary at war of the United States numbered 10,669 payable on the 4th of March and 5th of September annually at the Trenton Banking Company. And I do hereby solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March Anno Domini 1819, and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it was to bring myself within the provisions of an act of congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War” passed on the 18th day of March Anno Domini 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property of securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed by and by me subscribed. And this deponent further saith that he is by occupation a cordivainer that he is unable by reason of his infirmities to pursue it that he has a wife named Catharine and no children residing with him, who resides with him aged about sixty years that she is incapable by reason of her advanced age and infirmities to contribute to his support and he saith further that he and his wife have been assisted and supported by the overseers of the poor of the aforesaid Township of Oxford for about eight years last past.
