Pension Application for George Allen

            On this thirteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred thirty two, personally appeared before me, Gershom Morse one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of the County of Cayuga, George Allen a resident of the Town of Ledyard in said County of Cayuga in the State of New York, aged seventy four years and upwards, who being by me first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed June 7th 1832.
            That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated.
            First by enlisting for three months in Captain Woodward’s Company of Minute Men, First Lieutenant ____ Shaw—that at the time he enlisted he resided near Quaker Hill in Dutchess County in the State of New York, where he enlisted; that he was enlisted in said company some time in the Spring of the year 1775, and was marched direct from his said place of residence to the City of New York, where he remained and did duty as a private soldier in said company under the command as he believes of Colonel Swartwout’s for about two months, and was then with said company marched back to the first above mentioned place of enlistment, and there discharged, his term of service having expired.
            That on or about the first of July he again enlisted in an Infantry Company commanded by Captain William Pearce, Benjamin Elliot Lieutenant, for six months—that at the time he enlisted in said Company he was a resident of Quaker Hill in the County of Dutchess in the State of New York where he also enlisted; that he was marched with said company to a few miles below Kingsbridge in the State of New York where said company joined the regiment under command of Colonel Swartwout, & was marched thence through the City of New York & crossed over to Rutland on Long Island where they remained a few days, thence returned through the City of New York to Kingsbridge, at which time & place this deponent by and with the advice and consent of his Officers was voluntarily transferred to do duty as a private in an Artillery Company, the names of the officers of which he does not recollect—That he was thence marched with said Artillery company to White Plains where they lay some time entrenched until Colonel McDougel’s Regiment was driven from their position by the enemy. When the Regiment to which this deponent belonged were attacked and lost a number of their men but repulsed the enemy; after which and in the evening of the same day he was marched with his company for Pines Bridge where they arrived in a few days and remained until discharge.  That he served as a private soldier during the whole of the above terms of enlistment, to wit, nine months.
            That he has no documentary evidence of his service never having received a written discharge or any other evidence in writing.  That there is no person now living whose testimony can be procured who can testify to his actual service.
            This deponent further says, that he has lived in the County of Cayuga for more than twenty years, last past—previous to which time he lived at various places having been married but about one year and six months before he removed to and became a resident of Cayuga County.
            He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.  (Signed) George Allen

Letter written in reply to a request for information, dated March 20, 1933.
            Reference is made to your letter in which you request information in regard to George Allen, a soldier of the War of the Revolution.       
            The data furnished herein were obtained from the papers on file in pension claim, S.12909, based upon the Revolutionary War service of George Allen.
            The date and place of his birth and names of parents are not given.
            George Allen, while residing near Quaker Hill, Dutchess County, New York, enlisted and served as a private with the New York troops, as follows—from the spring of 1775, three months in Captain Woodward’s Company in Colonel Swartwout’s regiment; from in July1665 in Captain William Pearce’s company in Colonel McDougall’s regiment, was in the battle of White Plains, length of this service about 8 mos.
            George Allen was allowed pension on his application executed September 13, 1832, then aged seventy-four years and “upwards”, and a resident of Ledyard, Cayuga County, New York, where he had lived about twenty years.
            He stated that he married about one year and six months before moving to Cayuga County; name of wife not given.
            Allen Mosher in 1832 a resident of Ledyard, New York, stated that the soldier, George Allen, was the brother of his mother; did not state the name of his mother.
