            On the first day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen before me Daniel Quick one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the county aforesaid personally came Samuel Allen to me known a resident of the Town of North Salem in the aforesaid County, who being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he served as a private soldier in a company commanded by Capt. Jeronamus Hooglandt in the third troop of the second Regiment of Light Dragoons commanded by Col. Elisha Sheldon; nearly six years, and until the close of the war of the Revolution and was regularly discharged -- the particular time of his enlistment this deponent does not recollect and this deponent further saith that shortly after he was discharged he was so unfortunate as to loose a hand by the discharge of a cannon, by reason whereof his circumstances in life are so reduced as to greatly need the assistance of his Country for support in his present old age, and further this deponent saith not.
            Whereupon I the said Daniel Quick do hereby certify that I have satisfactory evidence as well from the foregoing deposition of the said Samuel Allen as from the annexed certificate of Joshua King who is personally known to me that the said Samuel Allen actually served in the War of the Revolution as aforesaid against the common enemy, and that his circumstances in life are very much reduced.

Letter dated November 2, 1926, replying to a request for information.
            I have to advise you from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim W.16168, it appears that Samuel Allen served nearly six years as a private in Captain Jeronimus Hoogland’s Company, Colonel Elisha Sheldon’s Regiment of Continental Light Dragoons, and served until the close of the War.
            He was allowed pension on his application executed April 1, 1818, while a resident of North Salem, Westchester County, New York, aged sixty years. He died April 4, 1831.
            Soldier married March 8, 1777 at North Salem, New York, Margaret MacKnight.
            She was allowed pension on her application executed May 9, 1837, while a resident of North Salem, New York, aged seventy-seven years.
            They had eleven children, Samuel, born May 16, 1778, Nancy, born September 19, 1780, and William born in June 1792 are the only names stated.
            The name of soldier’s father is not on record nor is the place where he enlisted.
