Pension Application for Jonathan Allerton

Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of the 4th July 1836.

Greene County SS.
            On the 25th day of December 1837 personally appeared before the undersigned one of the judges of “County Courts of said County, Bathsheba Allerton, a resident of the Town of Cairo in the County  of Green and State of New York, aged eighty three years and upwards, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration; in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, passed July 4th 1836.  That she is the widow of Jonathan Allerton who was in the army of the revolution that he went from the Town of Amenia in Dutchess County and State of New York in the fall of 1778 under a Captain Johnson, Lieut. Betts, that Col. Dubois was in command of the Regiment understood from her husband that he went to Peekskill, he was absent at this time three months, came home sick and was sick near all winter.  That the said Allerton her said husband was a volunteer in the service of the United States before that time and afterwards, but how long she from the great length of time is not able to say, that she understood from him and others that he was quartermaster, that she has no documentary evidence in support of the claim—she further declares that she was married to the said Allerton on the 17th day of September 1772, that her husband the aforesaid Jonathan Allerton died on the 10th day of August 1806, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will appear by the proof hereunto annexed.  (Signed with her mark)  Bathsheba Allerton
