Pension Application for Justus or Justice Artman

            Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress  passed June 7th 1832.

            On the fourth day of January 1833 personally appeared before me Mumon Buel one of the Judges of the Court of common Please [six] in and for the County of Green and State of New York Justice Artman resident of the Town of Hunter in the County of Green[e] and State of New York aged seventy four years old who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 says that he enlisted into the service of the United States in the Town of New Hartford in the County of Hartford and State of Connecticut and served under the several officers hereafter named that he enlisted on the tenth day of May in the year 1778 enlisted under Captain Madison and was emmediately thereafter put into the company commanded by Captain Smith in the regiment commanded by Colonel James Thompson wagon master general or the wagon department in the New York Line or of the Continental department in general that he enlisted in the said company for the term of one year on the said tenth day of May 1778 and that he continued to do duty in the said company and regiment until the eleventh day of the month of May 1779.  That he further states that on the said tenth day of May 1779 his time expired and he further says on the eighth day of May 1779 [?] days before his first year expired he again enlisted a second time at a place called Middle Brook in the State of New Jersey enlisted in the said ninth day of June 1779 enlisted for one year in the company commanded by Captain Boyd in the Regiment commanded by Colonel James Thompson wagon master general of the New York Line or the wagon department general and that he continued to do duty in this company and regiment until the fourth day of May 1780 when he was honourably discharged at Morristown State of New Jersey.  And this deponent further says that mentioning the times of his enlistment and discharges he might be mistaken.  In one day in one of the times of his enlistment but verily believes he is perfectly correct in the times he has mention that he is old and by reason of his old age and the consequent loss of memory he might have been mistaken in a day or two but in this case he believes he is morally certain in the precise days stated and he further says that this declaration is drawn and swore to for the express purpose of being more particular in this than was contained in my former declaration as respects dates and times and he further says that he considers this second declaration a part of the former one which was made by me and sworn to in the sixteenth day of August last 1832 and the same accompanies these proceeding.  And he further says that it was I not [???] he served two years in the said service and for it he claims a pension.  (Signed) Justus Artman.
            Sworn and subscribed this fourth day of January 1833 before me Munson Buel one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Green, State of New York.

            The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim S.22624, based upon service of Justus Artman in the Revolutionary War.
            Justice Artman was born November 6, 1757, in Germany, names of his parents are not shown.
            Justus Artman was taken prisoner a few days before the surrender of Burgoyne, length of time in captivity not stated nor any details of capture.  While residing in New Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut he enlisted May 10, 1778, served as teamster under Captains Madison, Smith, and Boyd, and Colonel James Thompson, Wagonmaster General, and was discharged May 4, 1780.  He enlisted about June 1, 1781, in Albany, Dutchess County, [Albany is located in Albany County] New York, served six months as private in Captain Shepherd’s company, Colonel Weisenfel’s New York Regiment and was in the battle of Johnstown.
            In 1832, Justus Artman stated that he moved from Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut to Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York from there to Woodstock, Ulster County and from there to Hunter, Greene County, new York, where he had lived for many years.
            The soldier was allowed pension on his application executed August 16, 1832, at which time he was a resident of Hunter, Greene County, New York.
            He died February 12, 1838, in Hunter Greene County, New York.  His wife Irving died December 5, 1818, in said Hunter; no further data show in regard to her.
            The following named children survived the soldier; Sally Jones, Anna Egbertson, Thomas Artman, Eliza Woodworth, and Justus Artman.
            In 1854, Jacob Egbertson and Benjamin Jones were living in Greene County, New York, their relationship to the family was not stated.
