Pension Application for Peter Atwill

            On this twenty eighth day of August 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the County Court now setting Peter Atwill a resident of the Town of Canandaigua County and State aforesaid aged sixty six years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.
            That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated.
            At Amenia Dutchess County and State of New York 1st May 1782 he enlisted for nine months in Colonel Wisenfelts Regiment and went to Fishkill and there got leave to join the Continental Army and enlisted for three years in Captain Moody’s Company afterwards Captain Savage in Colonel Lamb’s Regiment of Artillery (Colonel Lamb was gone to the southward) went to West Point and there done duty until the fall of 1783 when was ordered to New York and went in a Sloop to Harlem Heights landed was marched to Kingsbridge and then to New York and arrived at New York the same day the British evacuated the City and remained there on duty until the next spring, when he was ordered back to West Point and remained there until the fall end of three years from his enlistment when he was regularly discharged, when he went back to Amenia General Knox commanded at West Point while he was in service.  After his return from New York to West Point a Major had the command there but he does not remember his name.  Has no documentary evidence and knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service.  While on duty in New York, Lieutenant Cunningham was in command of his company.
            Was born in Amenia the 22d April 1765, then lived in Walton Delaware County and moved to Canandaigua 32 years ago where he now lives.  Knows Marcus Marsh and Daniel Ensign.
            He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.  (Signed)  Peter Atwill
