Pension Application for Andrew Campbell

            On the third day of April eighteen hundred and eighteen personally appeared before me, Thomas Adams Esquire one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of the County of Burlington aforesaid Andrew Campbell of said County, came personally made known—who being duly sworn according to law deposeth & saith that he is now seventy one years old—that in the year seventeen hundred and seventy five he enlisted in the army of the United States in the Continental Establishment for four months from the first of January in the same year—under Captain Peter Hill in the corps called the minute men—that after the expiration of the said term of enlistment-he enlisted a second time under Captain William Jackson of the fourth New York Regiment of which Henry B. Livingston was Colonel—for the term of one year—that in the month of October seventeen hundred & seventy-five by permission of his Captain he enlarged his term of enlistment—so as to serve during the war—but he continued to serve in the fourth regiment till the five New York Regiments were reduced to three—when he entered the Second New York Regiment—under Captain Theodore Fowler of the Infantry—Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt then commanding said regiment—that he continued to serve in said regiment till the third day of June 1783 when he was discharged at Snake Hill near New Windsor in the State of New York.  That at the time of his discharge he received a certificate of his services signed by Col. Van Cortlandt, Major Fish, and General Washington—That at the same time he received the badge of merit, being a strip of Worsted brown and yellow which he wore on his left arm three years.  That he placed the Certificate of his services, for safe keeping in the hands of Samuel Patterson who resided in Livingston Manor in the State of New York—That Pattersons house was afterwards burned and his certificate destroyed.  That during the last twenty four years he has constantly resided in the said County of Burlington and that from his reduced circumstances in life he is in need of assistance from his country for support.  (Signed) Andrew Campbell
