Pension Application for Matthew Carpenter

            At a Court of Common Pleas holden at the Court House in the Village of Elmira in and for the County of Tioga in the State of New York commencing on the fourth day of September 1832, Present Hon. Grant B. Galdwin first judge, Davis Bending, Joseph L. Darling, John R. Drake & Elijah Shoemaker, Esquire Judges.

            On this 4th day of September 1932 personally appeared in open Court before the Judges aforesaid being a Court of Record because made so by the Constitution and laws of the State having by Law a Clerk and Seal, now sitting Matthew Carpenter a resident of the Town of Elmira in the County of Tioga and State of New York aged Seventy three years the twenty sixth day of the present month who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
            That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated—He volunteered and enlisted into a company of Light Horse commanded by Captain Eleazer Woodhull in the month of May or first of June 1776 for the term of term of during the war—James Sayre late of this Town deceased was the first Lieutenant of the said Company William Hurd Second Lieut. and Azariah Martin Coronet—the company was under the command of Go. George Clinton who was by virtue of his office, Major General of the State Troops.
            The nature of the service was to get as express, spies, [ridetts?] and guards, and when necessary as scouting parties—Each member of the company found his own horse, arms, equipments and forage and was allowed one dollar per day for his services in the same company till the summer of  1783 when the company all discharged by Capt. Woodhull before named—during the said service the region of country through which he passed and to which his operations were confined and in answer to the several interrogatories put to him by the Court he says that he was born in the town of New Cornwall in the county of Orange and State of New York on the 26th day of September in the year 1759—that he has no record of his age but has obtained his knowledge of it from the tradition of the family believing that his name was originally inserted in the family Bible of his parents with the correct date of his birth and he distinctly recollects his age at the time of entering the service as before stated—that at the time he entered the service he lived at the place of his nativity—after the close of the Revolutionary War he continued to live there till the month of March 1793 when he settled at his present residence in Elmira where he has lived for the span of thirty nine years past—that he entered the service as a volunteer—that he was acquainted with Gen. Clinton, Col. Tustin of Goshen in the County of Orange  and with General Washington—That he never received any other discharge than a verbal one from Capt. Woodhull—That he would refer to his honor the first Judge of this Court to William Maxwell Esquire, Col. Selah Matthews—and Captain Ebenezer Sayre all of Elmira aforesaid as persons who are acquainted with his reputation for truth and veracity and who can testify to their belief in the truth of the foregoing declaration—That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.  (Signed Matt’w Carpenter.
