Pension Application Isaac Clute

W.16212 (Widow: Helen.  Married Isaac April 15, 1780, by Reverend Barent Vrooman, Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady.)  Clute or Cluet was a Captain of Batteaumen, fatigue men and laborers in the Department of the QuarterMaster General during 1777.

            On this twenty seventh day of May 1837, personally appeared before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Onondaga in said State, Helen Clute a resident of the town of Camillus in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, aged seventy five years, who being  first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress, passed July 4, 1836: That she is the widow of Isaac Clute deceased who was a private soldier in the Militia & in the Quarter Master General’s Department in the war of the revolution, as particularly set forth in her supplemental declaration & affidavits of witnesses.
            She further declares that she was married to the said Isaac Clute—on the fifteenth day of April (1780), in the year seventeen hundred and eighty; that her husband, the aforesaid Isaac Clute, died on the twenty seventh day of June 1833, and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed.  (Signed with her mark)  Helen Clute
            Sworn to, and subscribed, on the day and year above written, before A. Edwards Clerk of said Court.

Supplemental Declaration of Helen Clute an applicant for a pension under the act of 4th July 1836.  Widow of the late Isaac Clute deceased, who was a Revolutionary Soldier of the United States who testifies and says that she was joined in wedlock on the day in her declaration before given specified to wit, on the fifteenth day of April 1780 at the then town (now city) of Schenectada at the house of and by the Reverend Barent Vrooman at that time Pastor of the Reformed Dutch Church of said town.  That the following named individuals were the only persons present during the performance of the marriage ceremony viz, Daniel Consol and Tennette his wife Bartholomew Clute, Jacob Beekman & Nancy his wife, Cornelius Peek, Nicholas Van Allen & Eve his wife.  John Truax & Cornelia his wife, that every one of the aforenamed individuals have long since departed this life except Bartholomew Clute.
            And this declarant further saith that her husband the said Isaac Clute during his lifetime kept a family record which contained a memorandum of the day of their marriage that the sheet on which said record was kept has been long since torn out of the said family bible of said Isaac Clute and destroyed which was the only record of the marriage of which this delarant has any knowledge and proof.  (Signed with her mark)  Helen Clute

            On this 29th day of June 1837 the above named Helen Clute, personally appeared before me & subscribed the above supplemental Declaration in my presence & made oath that the facts set forth therein are true and correct according to the best of her knowledge  recollection or belief.  I further certify that the reason that the said declarant did not write her own name is the loss in part of her sight.  David G.             The Deposition of James J. VanVorst of the City of Schenectada in the County of Schenectada & State of New York aged seventy four years & upwards a pensioner of the United States, who testifies & says that he was during the war of the revolution well acquainted with Isaac Clute, the same person referred to and described in the annexed documents, that said Isaac Clute on or about the twelfth day of November 1781 at the same time & in company with this deponent marched with a detachment of Militia from the Regiment of Colonel Abraham Wemple in the District of Schenectada to Fort Herkimer, where said detachment joined the forces under command at Col. Marinus Willett, received five days provisions, and continued the march until the enemy was overtaken at Jerseyfield.  The whole term of this service was more than ten days—the commanding officer of this detachment was Captain Jellis J. Fonda, Jellis A. Fonda, Adjutant, Lieut Joh Van Ingen,Major Peterson, are the names of officers from Schenectady aforesaid that accompanied said detachment who this deponent recollects.  (Signed with is mark) James J.
