Pension Application for William Cross

W.16,220 (Widow: Catharine)  (Served as Sergeant and Captain.)
State of New York
Orange County SS.
            On this second day of August before the underlined, a judge of the court of Common Pleas of said County 1838, personally appeared Catherine Cross a resident of Crawford in said county aged 76 years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 entitled “An act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows”.   That she is the widow of William Cross who was a captain in the war of the Revolution & as such officer had the charge & command of a company of men on the western frontiers of Ulster County in said state in a Regiment of Militia commanded by Colonel Hasbrouck in which Johannes Jansen was Lieut Colonel.  That as such captain he was called out & went repeatedly to repel the Indians & guard the inhabitants from their incursions at Mamaukating & other places on the western side of Shawangunk mountain in said county of Ulster from the summer of 1778 to the termination of the war.   That as further evidence of her said husband’s appointment & service his commission is hereto annexed.  She further declares that she was married to the said William Cross on the 16th day of June 1791 by the Rev’d Andrew King.  That the newspaper entitled “The New York Journal & patriotic Register” printed in the city of New York dated June 22d 1791 containing the publication of her marriage to which is herewith annexed was received by her said husband within a few days of its publication & kept by him until his death & since that time by this deponent. That her husband the said William Cross died on the 20th Sept 1811 that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January 1794 at the time above stated.  That her mane previous to her marriage was Catherine Sly.  (Signed) Catherine Cross.
            Sworn & subscribed before me the day & year first above written & I further certify that from personal inquiry & examination she could not on account of bodily infirmity attend the coming session of the court of common pleas of said county.  H. W. Elliott, Judge of Orange Com. Pleas.
