Pension Application for Abraham Dingham or Dingman

            On this thirty first day of March one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, before me the subscriber one of the judges of the Court of common Pleas for the county of Schenectady in the State of New York personally appeared Abraham Dingman aged sixty five years resident in the city of Schenectady in said county, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the late Act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and Naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war”. That he the said Abraham Dingman enlisted one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven, (1) in the state of New York in the company commanded by Captain Robert McKean, of the First New York Regiment commanded by Colonel Goose VanSchaick, and in the service of the United States of America, that he continued to serve in said corps in the capacity of a common soldier for the United States until the twentieth day of July one thousand seven hundred and eighty three when he was honorably discharged from the service in the city of Albany and State of New York, that he was in the Battle of Monmouth (2) and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his power of said services except his discharge which is herewith transmitted.  (Signed with his mark)  Abraham Dingman

            These are to certify that the bearer here of Abraham Dingmen private in the said Regiment having faithfully served the United States six years and being inlisted for the War only, is herby discharged from the American Army. Given at Albany July 20th 1783.

1. Abraham enlisted as a private for “during war” in Captain Robert McKean’s Company in the First New York Continental Regiment on April 6, 1777.  An Adam Dingman also enlisted as a private on arch 5, 1777 in the same company.  Adam died 26 Feby 1778.  (Revolutionary War Rolls 1775-1783, Series M-246, Roll 65, Folder 13, National Archives, Washington DC.)  On the 29th Jany 1778, Captain McKean resigned.  His wife had died and he returned home to take care of his children.  The company was under various officers afterwards.  In 1781, Abraham was in Captain Benjamin Hick’s Company in the First New York.  He is listed as sick in Albany on the April 1781 Muster Roll.  (Revolutionary War Rolls 1775-1783, Series M-246, Roll 65, Folder 10, National Archives, Washington DC.
2. The Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey was fought on June 28, 1778.  He was not in the Yorktown, Virginia Campaign from September 28, 1781 to October 19, 1781.  The First and Second New York Continental Regiments were in this campaign.  Unfortunately the Muster Rolls for most of 1781 for Captain Hick’s Company are missing.  After April 1781 there is none until January 1782 and he is in the ”Genl Hospital, Albany.”  The reason he was not at the battle according to “A Genl Return of the Sick and Wounded In the Genl Hospitle at Albany Oct. 31, 1781 Belonging to the Several Brigades of the Army of the United States of America”, Abraham is listed but not his illness.  November 7, 1781, he is still listed and his illness is listed as “Ulcer’d leg”.  FROM: Collections of the New York Historical Society for the year 1915, New York pp 484-491.
