Pension Application for Harmanus Ehle (Harmanes)

Ehle the deponent who ??? [can’t read] sworn to the amended declaration
being duly sworn before the said Judges of the Peace of said county maketh
oath and saith that there was not much regularity in the ??? of field officers
at Fort Ehle mentioned in said declaration whilst this deponent was in garrison. This
deponent ??? [cant’ read several words] Colonels Clyde and Willett
were both ??? of as having control. This deponent thinks ??? that he
was generally called into service by his captain or lieutenant Van Every
and that they were commonly and perhaps all together under the direction
of the Committee of Safety which ??? coming ??? of a number of reputable
men collected from different parts of the country and generally holding their
??? in the neighborhood of Fort Ehle. This
deponent further said that during the tours of his actual service in fort
and otherwise as mentioned on his said declaration he was not engaged in
any civil employment and not ??? further testify that he is not that
he had not received any written discharge after his performance of any of
the aforesaid service and verily believes that if he had the same he has
long since been lost. And further he saith not.

Personally
appeared before me the undersigned a Justice of the Peace in and for the County
of Montgomery Hermanus Ehle the person mentioned in and who signed on to the
named declaration and being duly sworn deposeth and saith that by reason of old
age the consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to the positive
length of his service but according to the best of his recollection he served
not less that the period mentioned below and is the following grade. For
two years I served as a private in the militia of the State of New York and for
such service I claim a pension.
I further
state that Nicholas Van Alstine and David F. Sasia Esquire, Herman I. Ehle, John
R. VanEvery and David Eacker esquire and Thomas B. Nichols Esquire are some of
the respectable citizens of said Canajoharie who is acquainted with this deponent.

On this
nineteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred
thirty two personally appeared in open court before the judges of the Court
of Common Pleas in and for the County of Montgomery aforesaid now sitting Harmanus
Ehle a resident of the Town of Canajoharie in the County of Montgomery aforesaid
aged 69 years last November who being first duly sworn according to law doth
on his oath made the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of
the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. to wit:
That he was
born in the Town of Canajoharie in said county on the twelfth day of November
1762 and is now in his seventieth year, that he knows of no record of his age
being now in existence but has seen it some years ago in possession of his father,
that his twin brother Anthony Ehle is now present. That as soon as said
applicant was of sufficient age, he was enrolled into the company of Captain
Rynear Van Every and continued in the same during the Revolutionary War. Applicant
performed much ??? service during the four such years of the war of which he
recollects pretty distinctly the following items to wit: He was several
times, two of which he recollected distinctly stationed at Fort Plank where hw
spent eight days at each time. He was twice stationed at Fort Eaton at
one of which times he served out his own tour of eight days and at the other
he served his own tour of eight days and eight days for another person making
in the whole twenty four days at Fort Eaton. He started for Fort Stanwix
but was left for 7 days with about 30 others at Herkimer during which time he
spent one day on a ??? against the Indians. He was dispatched to Fort Stanwix
with provisions for the army. Applicant was employed for the greater part
of their ??? season in continuing and guarding Fort Ehle in Canajoharie and he
verily believes that the time spent by applicant in this last mentioned service
was not short of one year. And that the whole of the services performed
by this declarant in the Revolutionary War including such as are herein before
mentioned and those of which this deponent is not able to give any distinct statement
was equal at least two years.
He hereby
relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and
declares his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.
