Pension Application for James Giles

            On the 9 day of August 1832 personally appeared before me, Herman Wooster a judge of Herkimer County  courts, James Giles a resident of the town of Norway county and state aforesaid aged seventy one years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832, that he enlisted in the army of the United States on the 1st day of January 1777, in the town of Williamstown in the state of Massachusetts, under Capt. Moses Ashley in Col. Joseph’s Regiment, and in Gen. John Glover’s Brigade for three years service in the Massachusetts Line and was stationed Peek Kill was in the battle at the taking of Burgoyne; and after words was marched to Nalleyburgh? And was stationed there during the winter of 1777 & 1778—and the said James Giles further declares that the service all the time for which he enlisted [?] three years service he received an honorable discharge signed by Col. Joseph Nose which said discharge has been missing or lost and is not now in his possession; and [?] the said James Giles declares that he afterwards served in the militia and was in the Battle of Stonearabia under Col. Brown who was killed in that action and was also in the Battle at Johnstown and fought under Col. Willet in that Battle and the said James Giles relinquishes by these presents any claim whatever to any pension or annuity except for the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state and he thinks David Clock o& Nathaniel Post respectable residents of said town of Norway can vouch for his reputation.
