Pension Application for Adam Helmer or Adam Frederick Helmer

[About the only legible part of the file of importance is the letter replying to an inquiry for information, dated January 25, 1938.]
            Reference is made to your letter relative to Adam Helmer, a soldier of the Revolutionary War.
            The data contained herein were obtained from the papers on file in the Revolutionary War claim for pension, W.17067, based upon the military service of Adam Frederick Helmer in that war.
            The date and place of birth and the name of the mother of Adam Frederick Helmer are not shown.  He was the son of Frederick Helmer.
            While residing near Fort Dayton, New York, Adam Frederick Helmer, the name also appears as Joh: Adam F. Helmer, served in 1777, nine months as Lieutenant in Captain John Bradbrick’s Company of Rangers, and was in the battle of Fort Stanwix; he served in 1778, nine months as Lieutenant in the same company.  It is also stated that the night before the battle of Oriskany said Adam was dispatched by General Herkimer to Fort Stanwix to inform Colonels Willett and Gansevoort of his, General Herkimer’s approach; and it is also further stated that while Captain Bradbrick’s Company, of which said Adam was Lieutenant, was at Fort Dayton, near what was later Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York, intelligence was received at said fort of the depredations of Indians on the Mohawk River and they went in pursuit of the Indians, overtook them near Frankfort and had a skirmish, said Adam killing one with the Indian’s own tomahawk.  He also served at various other times during the Revolution, no definite data on file, was in several skirmishes with the Indians.
            He died in April 1830, his age not given.
            Soldier married February 27, 1776, at a place afterwards called Herkimer, New York, Anna Piet, daughter of Peter Bellinger.
            Soldier’s widow, Anna Helmer, was allowed pension on her application executed December 15, 1837, while a resident of Brutus, Cayuga County, New York aged eighty years.
            She die January 25, 1841, leaving the following children: David, Anna, widow of Henry Passage; Catherine, wife of John Hill; Elizabeth , wife of James Moores; Margaret, wife of George Passage; and Peter, who was fifty-one years old in 1837 and living in Brutus, New York.  There are no further family data.
