Donated by Dorothy Willis

Generation No. 1

1.  REV VET LEMUEL4 MYNARD  (GEORGE3 MAYNARD, GEORGE2 MYNARD, WILLIAM1 MAYNARD) was born about 1750 in Norwich, New London, CT1, and died 13 Oct 1841 in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus County, NY.  He married SUSANNAH BUTTON, daughter of JOSEPH BUTTON and MARY ATWELL.  She was born about 1763, and died about 1835 in Perrysburg, Cattaraugus County, NY.  (Her dates are from the old gravestone, which said she died at 80 years in the 1830s, but the exact date was broken off.)  The information is confirmed in Button Families of America Comp by R. Glen Nye p. 229.

His children spelled their surname, “Miner,” but when he signed his pension papers he spelled it, “Mynard.”

Lemuel Mynard is buried in the Mallory Cemetery, Perrysburg, Cattaraugus County, NY.  The original stone is gone, but it said, "Lemuel Miner, buried under arms Oct. 13, 1841 at 94 years."  "The Christian is dead, the soldier gone, On the pinion of angels, the spirit is borne."

“Lemuel Miner was a native of Norwich, Conn., and served seven years and seven months as drum-major of the Revolution, being pressed into the service and discharged personally by Washington.  He came to Perrysburg in 1820 and cleared a farm here purchased with his pension money.  At the time of his death in Dec., 1848, he was the oldest man in town, his age being ninety-eight.”
 From Perrysburg History, p. 858.

History of Cattaraugus County [p. 958-9] says, "Lemuel Minor was a native of Norwich, Conn., and served seven years and seven months as drum-major in the Revolution, being pressed into the service and discharged personally by Washington. He came to Perrysburg in 1820 and cleared a farm he purchased with his pension money. At the time of his death, in Dec., 1848, he was the oldest man in town, his age being ninety-eight. He married Susan Button and his children were Lemuel, Clara, Charlotte, Mary."

(These two quotations show how inaccurate histories can be!  They both have seven years instead of one year.)

Records of Servicemen in the Rev., 1812, Mexican Wars (Fiche 6046698 ) p. 635 lists “Lemuel Mynard-Musc.”

Perrysburg Pensioners Schedule 1840 lists Lemuel Miner, age 91, 12 in household, 1 in agriculture, 1 M 5-10yrs, 1M 10--15, 1M 40-50, 1M 90- 100, 1F under 5, 1F 5-10, 2F 10-15,1F 15-20, 1F 20-30, 2F 40-50, 1F 50-60.
