Pension Application for John Eckler, (Ackler, Ecklar) Private

On this
thirtieth day of May in the year one thousand eight hundred and twenty personally
appeared in open court being a Court of Record called the Common Pleas Court
for the County of Greene, John Ackler aged sixty-one years resident in the
Town of Catskill in the County of Greene who being first duly sworn according
to the law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War
as follows, in Captain Andrew Finks and Captain John Ten Brouks of Infantry
in the Regiment of the first New York Line, commanded by Colonel Van Schaick,
that the original declaration of the said John Ackler for the benefit of the
Act entitled “An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land
and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary war passed on the
eighteenth day of March 1818 bears date the ninth day of may 1818 to the best
of his knowledge and belief, and is enlisted on the pensions list Roll of the
New York agency by certificate November 775 and I do solemnly swear that I
was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818,
and that I have not since that time, by gift, sale or in any manner disposed
of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it, as
to bring myself within the provisions of an act of congress, entitled “an
act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of
the United States in the Revolutionary War, passed on the 18th day of March
1818 and that I have not nor does any person in trust for me any property and
???contracts or debts, due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained
in the schedule hereto amended and by me subscribed.

Real property None
Personal property-one bed, one table, four chairs, six cups and saucers,
six knives and forks, six plates, one churn, one tea kettle, three small
pots, one pail, our wash tub.

That my
occupation is that of day laborer, my ability to labor is impaired by old age
and infirmity, the members and names of my family are as follows, Caty aged
seventeen years, Magdalana aged fifteen years, Gertrude aged twelve years,
Henry aged ten years, my children living with me and are dependent upon me
for support and my wife named Gertrude, unable to contribute much to the support
of the family on account of old age and want of good sight.
Sworn and declared on the 30th day of May 1820 in open court before me. Wm. Van Bergen Clerk.
The Court estimates the value of the pensioners property contained in his inventory at twenty dollars.

On this
fifteenth day of February 1837 personally appeared before the Court of Common
Pleas of said county having original jurisdiction in open court (Present Dorance
Keitland first Judge and Henry Gosler and Sylvester Nicholas Judges. Gertrude
Ecklar a resident of the Town of Catskill in the County and State aforesaid,
aged seventy ttwo years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on
her oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of
the provision made by the act of congress passed July 4, 1836. That she
is the widow of John Eckler who was a soldier of the Revolution that he served
between six and seven years, as specified in his application for a pension
on file in the Pension Office, that his name is inscribed upon the Pension
List Roll in said office. That he was a Revolutionary Pensioner and as
such received a pension until the time of his death. That the certificate
has been returned to the War Department since the death of said John Eckler
and is (as this deponent believes) sill on file in the Pension Office. She
further declares that she was married to the said John Eckler on the fifteenth
day of April 1786. The said husband the aforesaid John Eckler died on
the fifteenth day of January 1833. That she has remained a widow ever
since that period as will more fully appear by referenced to proof hereto annexed,
and that the amount of pension hereby claimed is necessary to the comfortable
support of said claimant.

Polly Ackler
of the Town of Catskill County of Greene and State of New York being duly sworn
deposeth and saith that she is the daughter of Gertrude Ackler who was the
widow of John Ackler deceased.
That the
father the said John Ackler was a pensioner of the United States that he died
more than ten years since.
That her
mother the said Gertrude Ackler was also pensioner for five years from the
11th of March 1841.
That she
at present resides with this deponent has not intermarried and if the identical
Gertrude Ackler who is now an applicant for a pension under the act of Congress
passed on the 3? March 1843 for the services in the Revolutionary War of her
husband deponent’s father the said John Ackler deceased and further this
deponent saith not.
