Pension Application for Henry Sampson

W.4509 (Widow: Sally.  Married Henry 27th of June 1786, in Tompkins Township, Delaware County, NY.  Henry died 3d day of March AD 1852 in Scott Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania.)  Much of the 1820 deposition made by Henry is very poor and difficult to read.  At that time he said he was 54 years of age and a resident in Buckingham Township in Wayne County.

            On this fourth day of July AD one thousand eight hundred and eighteen before me the subscriber one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Wayne personally appeared Henry Sampson aged fifty two years resident in the said County of Wayne who being by me first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the Provision made by the late act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War.  That he the said Henry Sampson enlisted in Newburgh in the State of New York in the company commanded by Captain Peter Mills in Colonel Baldwin’s Regiment of Artificers and was about twelve years of age afterwards enlisted in Captain Peter Mills Company during the war after which a new arrangement took place and he was placed under Capt. Thomas Patten in Colonel John Lamb’s Regiment that he continued to serve in the said corps or in the service of the United States until peace was declares when he was discharged from the said service at West Point in the State of New York by General Knox that he was at the siege & capture of Cornwall at York Town in Virginia and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services.  Sworn to and declares before me the day and year aforesaid.  Abisha Woodward, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas.
