Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.

            On this third day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two personally appeared in open court before the court of Common Pleas in and for the County of West Chester in the State of New York now sitting Thaddeus Sarles a resident of the town of Mount Pleasant in the said County aged seventy seven years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed June 7th 1832.
            That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated viz. That on or about the first of May in the year 1775 he enlisted in a company of minute men in the said County of WestChester under the command of Captain Samuel Delavan for the term of one year to commence immediately from the time of his enlistment. That he does not now recollect the name of his colonel, that said company of minute men was raised in the town of North Salem in the said County; that the members thereof were required to hold themselves in readiness to march at a moment’s warning. That said company continued in the said town of North Salem until on or about the first of January in the year 1776 meeting once a week for the purpose of improving discipline. That on or about the first of January 1776 the said company was ordered to march to the City of New York. That he the declarant immediately marched in said company to that place, through the said County of West Chester and was stationed in the eat part of that city one month to watch the British ship Asia then lying in the East River opposite that city; that they were then marched north in the neighborhood of Hurlgate and were there employed in constructing a fort and continued there until the expiration of said term of one year which as on or about the first of May 1776, and was then and there discharged.
            And the Declarant further saith that he again enlisted some time in the month of August in the year 1776 in the company of Volunteer troops commanded by Captain Benoi Platt in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Thomas Thomas for the term of six months. That at the time he enlisted as last aforesaid he resided in the town of Bedford in the said County of WestChester. That he was immediately marched to Kings Bridge in the southern part of said county of WestChester and was employed in building Fort Independence and was stationed there until the retreat of General Washington with the American Army to White Plains in the said County of WestChester in the year 1776. That he was then marched to said White Plains and was in the American Army at the time of the battle at that place on the 28th of September 1776, that after the battle he was marched to Peekskill in the northern part of said County and continued in the service there and in that neighborhood until a few days before the expiration of said term of six months when he was marched to a place called Harrison’s purchase in said county and there discharged.
            And the declarant saith that from the time of his said last mentioned discharge which was on or about the last of January 1777 he resided in the said town of Bedford until the spring of the year 1779. And during that time belonged to Captain Marcus Moseman’s Company of Militia and Colonel Thomas Thomas Regiment. That there was a military guard kept at said Bedford during said years of 1777 & 1778 to protect the inhabitants from the British and refugees. That said guard was principally composed of members of said Captain Moseman’s Company. That he the declarant was in the service on guard in said town of Bedford with little intermission during the said years of 1777 & 1778 in terms of from two to twelve days. That in the interval between his terms he would return home and other members of the said company be ordered out to supply his place. That he served in this irregular manner in the years 1777 & 1778 and until the spring of the year 1779 when he removed from said town of Bedford into the town of North Salem.
            And the declarant saith that his services in said Moseman’s Company in the years 1777, 1778 and until some time in the spring of the year 1779 would in the aggregate amount to nine months.
            And the declarant saith that he claims a pension for his services herein before set forth as follows viz.
            That if the Department shall be of opinion that he is not entitled to an allowance for the entire year for which he enlisted in the militia service under Captain Samuel Delavan in the year 1775, then he claims an allowance for four months under said Delavan during which he was in actual service as herein before set forth.
            And the Declarant claims a pension for the term of active service of six months in the company commanded by Captain Benoni Hall in Colonel Thoams Thomas regiment in the year 1776 and January 1777 as herein before set forth.
            And the declarant also claims a pension for the irregular service in Captain Marcus Moseman’s company of Militia as herein before set forth amounting to nine months of active service although from its desultory nature he cannot set if forth with any greater particularly than in his preceding account of it.
            Service for which he claims a pension in the whole, nine months.
            1st And the Declarant saith that he was born in the town of Bedford in the said County of WestChester on the 13th day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty five.
            2nd That the time of his birth is recorded in his fathers family bible now in the possession of this declarant.
            3rd That at the time he entered the service as herein set forth he resided in the said town of Bedford that since the revolutionary war he lived in Bedford aforesaid except the last thirty years during which he has resided in the Town of Mount Pleasant in Westchester County and now lives in the town of Mount Pleasant in the said County of WestChester.
            4th That he entered the service as a volunteer under Captain Samuel Delavan and also under Captain Platt. That at the time he served in Captain Moseman’s Company he was ordered into the service by his officers.
            5th That the names of the officers who were with the troops where he served that he now recollects were Generals Washington, Putnam, Clinton and MacDougal who were with the troops in his campaign in 1776. And Colonels Sheldon and Milan were occasionally stationed at Bedford during his service there & that the general circumstances of his service are herein before set fort.
            6th The Declarant saith that he never received a written discharge from the service.
            7th That he has no documentary evidence of his services. That the names of the persons to whom he is known in his present neighborhood and who can testify as to his character for veracity and their belief of his services as a soldier of the revolution are the Reverend Ezra Fountain of the town of Bedford in said County and Jesse Coles of GreenBurgh in said County.
            He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. (Signed) Thaddeus Sarlls.
