Declaration of Nathan Sayre in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of congress passed June 7th 1832.

On this 18th day of August 1832 personally appeared before me Nicholl Halsey one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of the County of Tompkins in the said County of Tompkins, aged eighty four years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832—That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated—That in the year 1775 in the month of November he enlisted in the New York State Militia under Captain John Wisner, as a Sergeant for four months and served the time out—About the 1st of April 1776 he enlisted for four months and served as a Lieutenant under Captain John Wisner and served that time out—he was next out in Col. Hathorn’s Regiment of Militia for three weeks or more cannot recollect precisely how long—he was next called out in Co. Hathorn’s regiment after Fort Montgomery was taken was out 3 weeks or more at this time when in Col. Hathorn’s regiment was under Captain Edsall—was out on alarms a number of times besides the times set forth above but cannot state the length of time on this number of times—In the winter of 1780 enlisted in Captain William Crams Corps of Cavalry for one month was stated at Elizabeth Town served that month and also one other month under the like enlistment and under the same Captain Crane—was out under Captain Meeker two weeks at the time the British burnt Springfield in New Jersey—knew Col. Dayton of the regular service—Captains Jonathan Dayton and Aaron Ogden—was born near Elizabethtown in New Jersey on the 30th day of June 1748—has a record of his age in his Bible—lived in Orange County in the State of New York when he first entered the service—has lived 10 or 12 years in Elizabethtown during & since the time of the war has lived in this country for about twenty years00neverreceived any written discharge—now lives in Huton is acquainted with Richard Smith Esqr—P.M. Hector, James H. Hotchbrin Clergyman—Joseph Potter, Peter Hager 2d, says he has no written or documentary evidence excepting the affidavits herewith sent but has served one year or more during the Revolutionary War. That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declared that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state and that he is unable from bodily infirmity to go to where the courts are held in said county. Letter, September 21, 1923, written in response to a request for information.
            I have to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim, S. 17075, it appears that Nathan Sayre was born near Elizabethtown, New Jersey, June 30, 1748, and while residing in Warwick, Orange County, New York, enlisted November 1775 and served as a sergeant four months in a company of Minute Men commanded by Captain John Wisner, Colonel Isaac Nichols’ regiment, New York troops.
            April 1, 1776, he was commissioned a Lieutenant in the same company and same officers, and served four months. He was out on several alarms in the year 1777 in Captains Edsalls and Thomas Moffatt’s companies, Colonel Hawthorne’s regiment.
In the winter of 1780, soldier was residing in Elizabethtown, New Jersey and enlisted in Captain William Crane’s Corps of Cavalry and served one month. Summer of 1780, he served two weeks in Captain Obadiah Meeker’s Company.
            He was allowed pension on his application executed August 28, 1832, while a resident of Hector, Tompkins County, New York. He died April 16, 1841. He left a widow, no name is stated. There is no further family data on file.
