Pension Application for John Ed. Schoonmaker

            On the twelfth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and thirty two, personally appeared in open court, before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, in and for the County of Ulster, being a Court of Record for said County, Proceeding according to the course of the Common Law, with a Jurisdiction unlimited in point of Amount and keeping a Record of their proceedings, having a clerk and seal of their own John Ed Schoonmaker a resident of the town of Kingston in the County of Ulster, aged Sixty Nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed 7 June 1832.
            That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated.
            1st And the said John Ed. Schoomnaker [sic] declares that he was born on the fifteenth day of September in the year one thousand seven hundred and sixty three, in the town of Kingston in the County of Ulster and State of New York.
            2nd That the record of his age is contained is contained in [sic] his fathers family bible, now in possession of the children of his eldest brother residing in Dutchess County.
            3d That at the time he was called into service he lived in the town of Kingston aforesaid, has ever since lived there and now lives there.
            4th That when he was called into service he was a substitute for Garrit DeWitt, Richard TenEyck and others whom he does not now remember and that he was one of a class that had to furnish a man for this service.
            And the said John Ed. Schoonmaker, declares that he served for the term of “Nine” months in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty one in the company commanded by Captain Gilbert Livingston in Colonel Pawlings Regiment of detached or drafted militia of the State of New York in the United States Service as a private soldier, that the said company rendezvoused and were mustered by Captain Livingston under Major Elias VanBenschoten [inspective?] at the house of Evert Bogardus in the Village of Kingston in the beginning of the month of April in the year 1781, and marched from thence to the Western bounds of the town of Kingston and stationed in detachments at different places, under the officers belonging to said company, that he the said John Ed. Schoonmaker together with a small detachment were stationed at the house of one Johannes VanEtten, at a place known by the Indian name of “Waghkunk” that said detachment was under the command of Lieutenant John VanDeusen, and built a picket fort around the house of the said VanEtten, that the duty of said detachment was ranging the frontiers from one station to another through the towns of Kingston, Saugerties, Hurley and Marbletown, that on or about the first of January in the year 1782, the said company met at the house of the said Evert Bogardus in Kingston, and were there discharged by Major VanBenschoten, that he does not remember to have gotten a written discharge from said service and if he did, it is now lost.  That to the best of his recollection there were no regular officers in said service, that for proof of this service he begs leave to refer to the affidavits of Solomon Schutt and Johannis Schoonmaker hereunto annexed marked (A).
            He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state.  (Signed) John Ed. Schoonmaker
