            On this first day of July in the year one thousand eight hundred & thirty eight personally appeared before the undersigned a judge of the Court of common Pleas of the County of Orange & State aforesaid Elizabeth Schreeder of the town of Newburgh in said county aged seventy one years on the nineteenth day of May last who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision of the Act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 entitled an Act granting half pay & pensions to certain widows. That she is the widow of John I. Schreeder late of the Town of Newburgh aforesaid who was a private soldier in the army of the Revolution. That as she has been informed by her said husband & verily believes to be true that her said husband enlisted into the regular army of the United States & served therein as a private soldier the term of six years & three months but form old age and loss of memory she is unable to state under what officers and service was done but for a full statement & proof thereof she refers to the pension papers (now on file in the War Department) of her said husband who was a pensioner of the United States under the law of Congress, passed March 18th 1818, at the rate of ninety six dollars per years.
            That she was married to her said husband by the Rev. Mr. King a minister of the Presbyterian Church of said County at the house of said minister in the Town of Montgomery in said county on the fifteenth day of November in the year one thousand seven hundred & eighty seven.
            That her name before marriage was Elizabeth Hack and was at the time of her marriage aforesaid a resident of the Town of Newburgh aforesaid. That her said husband died at Newburgh aforesaid on the thirteenth day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred & twenty five. That she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but that her marriage took place previous to the first day of January seventeen hundred & ninety four at the time above stated. That she has no documentary evidence of the service of her said husband and refers to the records kept by the Rev. Mr. King for proof of her said marriage and that she has remained a widow ever since the death of her said husband the said John I. Schreeder. And that from old age & infirmity she is unable to attend the sitting of the Court of Common Pleas of said County. And further says that she never learned to write & that is the reason that this declaration is subscribed by making her mark & further says not. (Signed with her mark) Elizabeth Schreeder.

            On this eighteenth day of May in the year one thousand eight hundred and eighteen before me the subscriber one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, in and for the County aforesaid personally appeared John Schreeder aged seventy three years resident in the County aforesaid who being by me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War. That he the said John Schreeder enlisted in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight in the state of New York as a private soldier into a company at first commanded by Thomas DeWitt afterwards by Captain George Sytez in the then third New York Regiment afterwards the first New York Regiment, that he continued in the said service on the Continental Establishment till the termination of the War in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty three when he was discharged at a place called Snake Hill in the then County of Ulster State aforesaid on the eight day of June in the year last aforesaid.
            That under the command of Lord Sterling he was at the taking of a Fort on Staten Island in the winter of 1780 according to the best of his recollection.—That under the command of General Sullivan he was in the battle fought with the Indians near Tioga Point and that he was at the battles at York town at the taking of Cornwallis and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support and that he has no other evidence in his power of his said service. Letter dated March 14, 1938, requesting information.
            Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War record of your ancestor, John Schrader (Schroeder, etc. ) who lived in Newburgh, New York.
            The data which follow are found in the papers on file in pension claim, W.19320, based upon service of John I. Schreeder in the Revolutionary War.
            John Schreeder enlisted in 1778, specific date not shown, in New York State, served as a private in Captain Thomas DeWitt’s and George Sytz’s (or Sytez’) companies, Colonel VanSchaick’s New York regiment was at the taking of a fort on Staten Island, was in a battle with the Indians near Tioga Point, was in the battle of Yorktown and was discharged June 8, 1783, at Snake Hill, New York.
            He was allowed pension on his application executed May 18, 1818, at which time he resided in Orange County, New York; he was aged then seventy-three years. The date and place of his birth are not shown. In 1820, he resided in Montgomery, in said Orange County. The soldier died December 13, 1825, at the home of his son, Elisha P. Schreeder, in Newburgh, New York.
            The soldier married November 15, 1787, in Montgomery, Orange County, New York, Elizabeth Hack or Hach, then a resident of Newburgh, New York; Elizabeth was born May 19, 1757. They were married by the Presbyterian Minister.
            Elizabeth Schreeder, the soldier’s widow, was allowed pension on her application executed July 31, 1838, at which time she resided in Newburgh, New York. She was living there in the fall of 1850.
            Elisha P. Schreeder, son of John Schreeder and his wife, Elizabeth was born April 15, 1791. He resided in Newburgh, New York, in 1838. No reference was made to other children.
